Wagner College is a private, co-educational, national liberal arts college, located atop Grymes Hill, in Staten Island, which is a borough of New York City, in the US state of New York, with a population estimated at a number of approximately 491 700, fact which makes it the least populated of New York’s five boroughs, however, it is the largest in area, occupying 59 sq mi of land.
Wagner College in 1883, in Rochester, NY, first starting as the Rochester Lutheran Proseminary, which had the mission to train Lutheran ministers, being moved to its present location in 1918, after becoming Wagner Memorial Lutheran College, in 1886, being named in memory of John G. Wagner’s son.
The college is regionally accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and it has a total enrollment of approximately 2 400 students, to whom the college offers several undergraduate degrees in the arts and sciences as well as some pre-professional courses of study, among the most popular undergraduate majors being Biological Sciences, Psychology, Business, Sociology and Theater.
Its athletic teams are known as the Wagner Seahawks, who compete at the NCAA Division I level in all intercollegiate athletics except for football, in which they participate at the NCAA Division I FCS (Formerly I-AA) level. Wagner is the seventh smallest college in the country that participates in NCAA Division I athletics and the third smallest in the NEC. The most prestigious and popular athletic programs at Wagner are football and men’s basketball, in which the Seahawks have experienced their most notable achievements.
Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, there are: Molly Burnett - star of Days of Our Lives, Fred Espenak - NASA astronomer, Carmine Giovinazzo - actor (CSI: NY), Vinnie Potestivo - Television Producer, Alexey Shishkin - CEO, Gallant Star LLC, Laura Graham, executive director, William J. Clinton Foundation, and Walter Hartung, Founding member of TKE ZA chapter at Wagner, telecommunications engineer; established Walter G. and Lillian Hartung Endowment for Mathematics, among others.
